Bilingual

A bilingual classroom includes instruction in both English and another language like Spanish. This type of learning prepares English speakers to learn more languages.  Children experience a different language and culture. It helps non-native English speakers master English as well as their home language. Children develop both languages at the same time.

Caregivers and teachers lead children using their own language and non-native language. The teacher may read a book in English and another language like French or Spanish. The classroom has books, music, games, and labels to support learning in both languages. Children sing songs and play games in English and another language. Research shows that learning a new language has a positive impact on young kids.

Bilingual education can often help children:

  • Improve math and language skills
  • Develop strong thinking skills
  • Move from task to task efficiently
  • Focus, remember, and make decisions
  • Learn other languages
  • Feel comfortable in a diverse setting
